A few months back I struggled with the idea of collecting signatures in support of the Florida Family Policy Council's drive to put the Florida Marriage Protection Amendment on the 2008 ballot. I struggled with the idea not because I am against the sanctity of marriage, but rather, because I am against dictating to others what they should or should not do with their life.
Nonetheless, I went to a polling place at my neighborhood, I voted on the primary, and then proceeded to collect signatures from those who came by to vote. It was a great thing to do because I got a chance to share the Gospel with many people whom where completely confused about homosexual marriages, and because I felt I had given God a voice on the political process of this country. Aside from that, I have mixed feelings about my participation and my affiliation with the Florida Family Policy Council, the American Family Association, and other conservative Christian groups that I have supported in the past.
Did I change my mind and have now joined up with the dark side of morality? By no means, I pray that Christ will never let me do that! By the grace of God, I am a firm believer in God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. I believe in the Holy Scriptures to the point that many have accused me of being a fundamentalist, and I live to share the message of Salvation that is Christ Jesus my Lord. I am against homosexuality and consider it to be a cancer to society and God's children; I despise the killing of unborn babies and the execution of human beings. I am totally against war and against the destruction of human life, and I abhor poverty and injustice.
But one thing that I will not do is force what I believe on other people. People have the constitutional right to believe what they want, how they want and when they want, so long as their belief does not violate the rights of others. Not only that, people have been given a choice by God, to follow Him or not. And if God has given each of us that choice, then who am I to demand otherwise of others?
For that reason I feel that the American Family Association and its founder and chairman Donald E. Wildmon is way out of line. Mr. Wildmon, I have a question: Who has given you the right to go about the world forcing your way into the doorways of hearts, as you attempt to force what you believe into the hearts of those who in your views are not pure enough to be called Americans?
Are you forgetting that being an American entitles one to certain freedoms, and it prevents others from imposing their ideals on us? So while I believe that homosexuality is a destructive disease that is corrupting the hearts of many, I have no right to force others to believe the same way that I do. In spite of the fact that I believe that one can only be saved by believing in Christ, I cannot make others to believe what I believe.
My values and the values of my family are based on the Judeo-Christian Bible. To me there is no other way by which to live, but obviously not everyone feels the same way that I do. So for me to demand that Muslims or any one else for that matter, adheres to the true teachings of my Bible is presumptuous, and calloused. Therefore, if Keith Ellison wants to use the Koran to take his oath of office, he is entitled under the constitution of the United States to do so. As a matter of fact, if you stop and think about Mr. Wildmon, does it not make sense that Keith Ellison makes a promise based on something that he believes on, rather than on something that does not matter to him?
I think it is time for the American Family Association and other groups that adhere to the same mode of operation under the banner of Christianity, to take up some interest in the needs of the poor and the oppressed of this great country of ours. In case you have not noticed, there are many in this country that are starving to death. Now, there is an immoral cause of great proportions right under our own noses, yet for some reason "conservative" Christian groups (as if Christianity was partisan) seem to over look that problem.
So instead of spending your time acting as if you were the "morality police", you should consider letting God handle the law enforcement as He sees fit. Back off and let God be God. Focus on sharing the mercy and love of Christ, on proclaiming the Word of God, and on prayer. This is how we can win the world for Christ.
